Jim Hartog is an American jazz musician, known primarily as a baritone saxophonist. He attended Grinnell College (B.A. in History), the New England Conservatory of Music (B.M. in Jazz Performance), and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (Masters in Jazz Composition). Jim was a founding member of the 29th Street Saxophone Quartet, playing with the group from 1982 to the present. Other performance associations include the East Down Septet, Bobby Watson, the Fra Fra Big Band, Tom Varner, Karl Berger, Carmen Lundy, Keshavan Maslak, the Mingus Big Band, Tito Puente, and the Village Vanguard Orchestra. Jim is also a widely-experienced and sought-after instructor of saxophone technique, having spent two years as ‘docent’ at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam, as well as regularly giving private lessons.
